Text 1

Smoking is not just a personal decision because it affects more than just the smoker. Here are a few reasons why:

a) Health Risks for Others: When people smoke, others around them can breathe in harmful smoke, too. This can cause health problems for non-smokers, like breathing issues and heart disease. So, smoking can impact the health of other people, not just the smoker.

b) Costs to Society: Smoking leads to high healthcare costs for treating diseases caused by smoking. It can also affect work productivity because smokers may miss work due to illness. These costs can affect everyone, not just the person who smokes.

c) Environmental Impact: Cigarette butts are a big source of litter and can harm the environment. Tobacco farming and cigarette production also use resources and can damage nature. This shows that smoking affects the environment, not just the individual.

So, while smoking is a personal choice, it has effects that go beyond just the person who smokes, impacting public health, costs, and the environment.

Text 2

Although smoking affects others and the environment, some people believe that personal choice should come first. Here’s a different way to look at the issue:

a) Personal Freedom: Some people think adults should have the right to make their own choices, even if smoking has risks. They believe that adults are able to understand these risks and should be trusted to decide for themselves. They argue that we should respect personal freedom and not limit people’s choices too much.

b) Economic Impact and Personal Choice: Even though smoking can lead to high healthcare costs, some believe that smokers should cover these costs themselves, like by paying higher insurance premiums. They also point out that the tobacco industry provides jobs and economic benefits, so smoking can have some positive effects as well.

c) Environmental Impact and Personal Responsibility: While smoking can harm the environment, some believe that people can take steps to reduce this harm, like by properly disposing of cigarette butts. They argue that personal choice should not be restricted just because of environmental concerns, especially if people are willing to take responsibility for their actions.

In short, while smoking does affect others and the environment, some think that personal freedom and responsibility should be the main focus, with solutions found to manage the impact.
